Commonword is a writing development organisation based in Manchester, providing opportunities for new and aspiring writers to develop their talent and potential.

Their competitions, workshops and events act as a point of focus for many writers seeking encouragement and confidence. From small beginnings in 1977, they have grown into the largest new writing, community writing and publishing organisation in the North West. They work  on regional, national and international levels, promoting new writing and helping new writers become more successful.

They have a number of key projects, one of which is cultureword which was established in 1986 as a centre for Black creative writing in the North West of England. It has achieved national renown for discovering, developing and promoting Asian, African Caribbean and Chinese writers. Another is their wriers group ‘Identity’which meets at the Commonword office every Wednesday, 6.30pm – 8.30pm. There is also a young writers stand called ‘Young Identity’ which is twenty-six strong group of young writers led by the senior coordinators, Shirley May and Ali Gadema. Formed in Moss Side, Manchester in 2006, the creative project includes poetry, script writing and performances. Click here for their whats on guide.
