The University of Salford
A public research facility in Salford which gained university status in 1967, set in 160 acres of parkland next to the River Irwell.
The University of Salford has over 20,000 students. The poet and The Scots Makar Jackie Kay has been its chancellor since 2014.
The School of Arts and Media is the largest school in the university, with more than 4000 students and a number of creative courses. These range from Fashion Image Making and Styling to Creative Writing and Online Journalism.
Students often have the opportunity to apply their creative skills, and enjoy close links with the BBC and other nearby MediaCityUK institutions.
The university’s connection to multiple forms of writing is often recognised – as highlighted in a collaborative programme with MEN Media, which has involved students producing two pages of news every week directly with the team behind the Salford Advertiser.
Salford’s creative writing courses give students the opportunity to learn from published authors and academics including Scott Thurston, David Savill, Dr Gill James and Dr Ursula Hurley.
