Black Cat Poets

An open mic poetry night hosted by Thackeray’s Bookshop in East Manchester, held on a Thursday evening on a monthly basis.

Black Cat Poets often features special guests and offers an encouraging environment for readers and writers of poetry. The event takes place upstairs in the Black Cat Café within this much-loved book, art and craft shop beside Denton Civic Square. Admission is £3, including a drink.

Known for the variety of readings, the evening involves both new and established poets. In the past these have included the Manchester Writing School’s John Fennelley, Helen Mort and Kim Moore. Rebecca Audra Smith, co-founder of Stirred, Manchester’s feminist collective has also featured.

They also host special events, with a reading involving Susannah Evans and Mark Pajak raising £80 for Cancer Research UK.

New readers and people who have never attended a poetry night are especially encouraged to take part. Readers must register in advance by e-mailing thackeraysbooks@yahoo.co.uk.
