Speak Easy

A friendly spoken-word night held at the Stretford Sip Club on Barton Road, typically on the first Thursday of every month 7.30-10pm – with free entry.

Self-described as ‘safe and supportive platform for writers of poetry, prose and creative non-fiction. An open mic is available with five minutes of stage time for each performer. To sign up for a slot on the night email: [email protected]

They have previously submitted inventive writing prompts online prior to the events, with examples including ‘re-tell the story of your first kiss… but set it a thousand years in the future’ and ‘write a 3D poem (whatever that means)’.

All are welcome – from beginners to experienced readers – and a wide variety of forms are encouraged including poetry, storytelling and comedy. Often running under the slogan ‘Living Room Literature’, it offers an accessible and welcoming place for performance without pressure.

A more recent feature is a ‘Speak Easy Surgery’ from 6.30-7.30pm in the Sip Club before the Speak Easy Night itself. This is an opportunity to talk to fellow writers, practice performance techniques or be inspired.
